Arts Education Portfolio
This portfolio focuses on promoting access to the arts.
I have focused my personal grantmaking on arts education and dance. Growing up in New York City, I had the privilege of being exposed to the arts at a young age. I believe all students should have the opportunity to experience the power of the arts. Unfortunately, many New York schools do not offer arts education; this is something I feel passionate about changing. I have found investing in people -- in true leadership -- has allowed me to be inspired, to learn, and to make the most impact.
About the curator
Sarah Needham joined the Stavros Niarchos Foundation in 2014 and is a Program Officer focusing on arts and education grantmaking. Prior to joining the Foundation, she worked in a series of roles at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. While there, she spearheaded the first ever, campus-wide public art initiative; helped organize a yearlong celebration of the institution’s 50th anniversary; managed the young patrons program; and worked in the press office, where she publicized the historic redevelopment of the Lincoln Center campus. Sarah graduated from Williams College with a degree in Art History and received an M.B.A. from NYU’s Stern School of Business. She serves on the Board of Overseers of the California Institute of the Arts and the Board of Trustees at Danspace Project.
Opportunities in this portfolio
New York Public Library (NYPL)
NYPL Education Programs
Support your local libraries! Libraries have some of the most innovative programming and much of this is due to the support of private philanthropy. You can direct your gift to education efforts which include everything from pre-k storytime to resume support and zumba.
National Dance Institute (NDI)
NDI General Operating
It's hard to not fall in love with NDI, which was founded in 1976 by former New York City Ballet principal Jaques d'Amboise. NDI brings dance into public schools and also has a beautiful space on 147th Street that offers year-round programming to students of all levels and backgrounds.
Opening Act (OA)
OA General Operating
An organization of Opening Act's size benefits most from general operating support. As they bring on new funders and initiatives it's important to ensure their core activities continue.
